What you actually get free

No card, no countdown, no day thirty. This page is the whole list, including the caps, because a free tier you have to discover the edges of is not really free.

Most apps call something free and mean free for a fortnight, or free with adverts, or free until the part you actually wanted. Kriterion's free tier is the app, used every day, permanently, without paying and without being sold to.

Here is exactly where the line sits.

Free, always

The caps, and why they exist

CapWhy
Five barcode scans a dayEvery scan is a lookup against databases that cost money to query. Five a day covers ordinary use; a big shop does not
Ten saved recipesEnough for the meals you actually repeat. Nobody else gives you ten free, and we raised it from two because capping recipes felt mean
One routine of your ownThe built-in programmes are unlimited and uncapped, so this only bites if you are writing your own training

What Premium is for

One line covers it: free tells you what you ate, Premium tells you what you burn.

The free tier gives you a calorie target the way everyone else does, from a formula worked against your own body. Premium is where the formula starts to fade. Every week the app compares what you actually ate against what the scale actually did, and moves its estimate towards what your own body is showing. The more consistent weeks it has, the more it trusts you and the less it leans on the textbook, with the margin printed next to the number and narrowing as you feed it.

It never switches the formula off entirely, and it does not pretend to. Day one it is mostly the textbook; months in it is mostly you.

Premium addsWhat it is
Your measured burn rateWorked from your own data rather than an equation, and it moves as you do
The margin, and the self-checkHow sure the app is, and its own score for how well its earlier predictions matched your scale
The weekly check-inWhat changed, why, and what to do about it
Deeper analysisBurn rate charted, energy balance day by day, nutrients over time, measurements and photos
Micronutrient depthThe full picture rather than the macros and the seven that are near-complete across the database
Coach toneThree separately written voices rather than the balanced one
Training depthWhat to lift next, plateau and deload calls, supersets, custom exercises, unlimited routines
Scanning past the cap, recipe breakdowns, supplementsThe rest of the ceiling lifted

What nobody gets, at either tier

What you log stays on your phone. The privacy policy lists the three things that ever leave it, and one of those only happens because you chose to send it.

How does that compare? Of the five trackers we measured ourselves against, most charge for the first line on this page, and the ones that do not pay for it with adverts. See which is which, or join the list and we will tell you once when it ships.
